There is lots of info on how to do this and many other evil things in
various texts and books on the net. They are not hard to find.

Why do you assume that it was kids that did this? and also idle kids?
Sure, it could be me with some low level imagination and using my favorite
search engine. Maybe you just know how to use newsgroups and you don't
have a browser installed.

Hey, just kidding..

what kind of info is on a magnetic strip?
Isn't the card number written on front of the card with the expiry date and
owners name?
What other info is needed?

Well the RNC are wrong. The PIN for anyones debit card or credit card
are stored at the banks national or regional datacentres where everyones
account information is stored. The purpose of the PIN would be useless
if it were stored on the card. It doesn't make any sense since if you
need a debit card replaced such as loss, you get a new card, but the PIN
is the same. As well, the many schemes of installing tiny video cameras
on bank machines or having third partys "look over the cardholders
shoulder" wouldn't exist.

There is no way to use a VCR head to read the magnetic strip on credit
cards. This is an old urban myth.

In regards to credit cards, the only thing the magnetic strip does is
transmits the information printed on the front of the card anyway. It does
automatically what you have to do manually with your mouth while ordering
somthing over the phone.

With regards to debit cards, PIN information is not stored on the card, it's
stored in a computer at your bank, which is why banks are networked
together.

Nice troll, but an old one. Terrorist hoaxes are much better for the modern
age.

Any one can buy a cardreader and swipe a card through it. At my old work i
opened notepad on a PC with a reader and swiped my own card. It spit out The
Name and Account number (both printed on the front of the card) as well as a
few numbers that looked like bank identification stuff.

By the way, when was the last time anyone needed more than the card holders
name, card number and account number to order something over the phone or
internet? I've never needed to use my pin number.

Just a theory, but it's entirely possible that the offender indeed told the
police this old urban myth so they wouldn't know about and thus confiscate
his card reader :)

card....
Just a theory, but it's entirely possible that the offender indeed told the
police this old urban myth so they wouldn't know about and thus confiscate
his card reader :)

Your wrong, I was in jail a long time ago with a kid who did this. It shows all the info including acct balance AND PIN on the TV when you run the card through the tape reader on the VCR. Not sure of it still works but it did 10 years ago.
