Hi Group

I am searching for answers as to the policy of Newfoundland Power and
their disconnect policy.

I am way overdue on my residential bill. Due to some serious medical
issues with my daughter, who is 7 and has CP, I have been unable to
pay my bill for quite some time. During Christmas I had to take her
to the Childrens hospital in Toronto, out of pocket. Since then I
haven't been able to catch up on my power bill and I currently owe
about $800. I received a notice that it would be disconnected on
Thursday. Does anyone know if they can do this during the winter?
How willing would they be to work with me on payment arrangements?
I've tried to call them and spoke with someone who insisted that I pay
the full amount before Thursday and would not work with me at all on
any payments, even though I was reasonable and offered $400 next week
and the other $400 the week after that. Are they allowed to do this?

I'm very scared and at this point afraid to even call back. If anyone
knows of the policy or if they may be bluffing me, please let me
know. Thanks in advance.

I don't know for sure, but I would assume they have a No-Disconnect
policy during the winter months (probably november to march)

Your best bet is to either go directly to your local hydro office and
speak to them directly (this will help show that you're not just some
sketchy person trying to avoid your bill), or, send an anonymous email
to them (http://www.newfoundlandpower.com/ContactUs/Default.aspx) and
ask your questions about their policies like No-Disconnect.

If it were me, I would go to the office. Show them your serious about
your repayment.

Sally, I can't immediately find the policy online. My strong
suggestion is to call the law firm of Roebothan McKay and
Marshall 1-800-563-5563. I'm sure they have dealt with
Newfoundland Power in the past and can advise and help you. They
do not charge for the first consultation. Their web address is;

http://www.makethecall.ca/en/

Good luck

As my cousin's husband says, if you don't pay your bill, the next one comes
with a pair of pliers in the envelope. I know of a person who owed them
$300 including that month's bill and they came with pliers in hand and if
the bill had not been paid immediately, they would have cut off the power.
And that was in the winter. .

I feel terrible for your situation and would help you out if I were in a
position to do so. I just started maternity leave so no money is tight for
now.

I understand that they want their money but if you are willing to make
arrangements and they want to play hardball, tell your story to The Telegram
and see what happens.

Thanks everyone for your help. I called and spoke with a supervisor
and they gave me a weeks extension. They are working with me on
this. I had to bypass the regular bill/payment number....they were
not helpful at all. Thankfully the supervisor I spoke with was very
kind and compassionate. What a relief!!

Thanks again!
