Hi, though this a Usenet newsgroup, not a Chatroom.
What's the difference?
I think a Chatroom is for real-time chatting.
I think, based on what I observe being done and have done myself,
newsgroups are for discussions (chatting if you will) of whatever
subjects are of general interest to the folks who inhabit them.
For instance, this one is for general topics affecting the
Province of Newfoundland. Those discussions can, of course, take
place at any time, real or imagined, and those doing the
discussing can be from anywhere in the world.
There are some things that are generally frowned upon in
Newsgroups; they are help wanted and for sale ads.
Having said that, I also observe that Newsgroups are slowly dying
out. That is mainly because they become inhabited by 'netkooks'
who join in for no other reason than to anonymously express
things that they wouldn't dare say to your face. They are people
who seem to believe that their opinions cannot be challenged
simply because they are just opinions. They either don't know,
or choose to ignore the fact, that opinions are formed by
learning, observation or some other experience.
